Charity is an ideal avenue towards purifying your soul, for the Quran says: So fear Allah as much as you can; listen and obey and spend in charity for the benefit of your own soul and those saved from the covetousness of their own souls. They are the ones that achieve prosperity (Surah at-Taghabun ayah 16) Giving a little from your wealth does not lessen it, for infact those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah and do not follow up their spending by stressing their benevolence and causing hurt, will find their reward secure with their Lord. Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “There is no person who does not have the obligation of (doing) charity every day that the sun rises.” Charity does not necessarily need to be in monetary value. Sharing knowledge is charity. To speak a kind word and to forgive people's faults is better than charity followed by hurt. To smile at your siblings in Islam, to share the warm and love that a smile brings is charity. To utter words of kindess to your fellow man is charity. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) was asked, “ From where would we get something to give in charity (so often)?” To which he (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Indeed the gates to goodness are many: glorifying God, praising Him, magnifying Him, saying ‘There is no god but Allah,’ enjoining the good and forbidding the wrong, removing (any source of) harm from the road, making the deaf hear (and understand), guiding the blind, showing the seeker his need, striving as far as your two legs could carry you and with deep concern to give succor to him who asks, carrying with the strength of your arms (the burdens of) the weak. All these are (acts of) charity.” And he added, “And your smiling in the face of your brother is charity, your removing of stones, thorns, and bones from people’s paths is charity, and your guiding a man gone astray in the world is charity for you.” It is better to give charity in secret and not make a show of it, for the pride associated with extravagance and approval from others stains the purity of the cause. Charity is purely for the sake of Allah (swt), so best it be done in goodness and with a pure heart for no-one’s approval except that of Allah (swt). Charity aids in the maintaining the ties of faith, affection, and love to bind hearts and the society together. Allah says in the Qur’an, (And (as for the believers) God has brought their hearts together. And if you had spent all that is in the earth you could not have brought their hearts together.) (Al-Anfal 8:63) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No one of you (truly) believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) Which is the true essence of charity. Giving is always better than receiving. Give with a pure heart and seek nothing in return. On giving; There are those who give little of the much which they have - and they give it for recognition and their hidden desire makes their gifts unwholesome. And there are those who have little and give it all. These are the believers in life and the bounty of life, and their coffer is never empty. There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward. And there are those who give with pain, and that pain is their baptism. And there are those who give and know not pain in giving, nor do they seek joy, nor give with mindfulness of virtue; They give as in yonder valley the myrtle breathes its fragrance into space. ~Khalil Gibran Spend in the way of Allah (swt).
