Daily Reflections - Allah swt's Mercy and Wrath PDF Print E-mail
Often the wrath of Allah (swt) remains very much etched into in our minds –the avoidance of which results in our constant attentive and vigilance of deeds, weighing of sinful and rewarding behaviour and actions and our treatment of others to mention just a few.

Vivid images of the punishment inflicted on the inhabitants of Hell, natural disasters, wrongly or rightly are associated with the wrath of Allah (swt). Hot scorching coals embedded into skins, stretching of limbs until they snap…descriptions of this kind are numerous and can be found in abundance.

However, Allah’s (swt) Mercy far surpasses His Wrath. Man is given numerous chances and occasions whereby to repent and seek to engage in behaviours and actions that please Allah (swt) –

“Say: 'O My slaves who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”[Soorah az-Zumar (39): 53]

From detailing the rewards and blessings of prayer, the time of the night whereby Allah (swt) seeks those who seek Him, putting us through testing situations and circumstances and instilling in man the natural state of dependence on Him and His Infinite Mercy.

Abu Hurayrah (ra) related that the Messenger of Allaah (saw) said: "Allaah created mercy in one hundred parts and sent down to earth only one part. Because of this one part there is mutual love amongst creation, so much so that an animal will lift up its hoof from its young one, fearing that it might harm it. Allah has reserved the remaining ninety-nine parts of this mercy to favour His believing servants on the Day of Judgment. [Bukhari (4/223-224) and Muslim (8/96-97]

Often the Mercy of Allah (swt) is illustrated by comparison. The most sought one being the love a mother has for her child, the diligence by which she cares and loves her children and the staunch unweariness by which she seeks safety of her offspring is often hard to grasp. The following hadith demonstrates the love Allah (swt) has succinctly>

*Umar Ibn al-Khattab (ra) relates that some prisoners were brought before Allah's Messenger (saw) and amongst them was a woman who was frantically searching for someone in the crowd.

When she found a baby amongst the prisoners, she took it in her arms, cradled it next to her chest and suckled it. So Allah's Messenger (saw) said: "Do you think that this woman would ever throw her child into the fire?" We said: 'By Allah, Never!' So he said: "Allah is more merciful to His believing servants than that mother could ever be to her child." [Bukhari (10/426) & Muslim (18/80)]

Allah’s Mercy far exceeds the love and mercy that most of mankind has encountered – even that exhibited by our mothers. Our mothers demonstrate the epitome of unconditional love, mercy, even when on the receiving end of her anger.

Abu Hurayrah (ra) relates that Allah's Messenger (saw) said: "Indeed, before Allah created the creation, He decreed for Himself, 'Indeed My Mercy prevails over My Anger.” [Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim (17/68)]

May we all bear in mind the graces bestowed on us by Allah (swt), the innumerable opportunities He provides us for repenting, to become closer to him, to show our love towards those He loves – send Salaam to Allah’s Messenger (saw).

Let us be conscious of Allah (swt)'s Mercy AND His Wrath.

Allah's Messenger (saw) said: “Allah the Most High says: 'O son of Adam! As long as you supplicate to Me and hope in Me, I will forgive you what you have done. O son of Adam! If your sins were to reach the lofty regions of the sky, then you ask Me for forgiveness, I would forgive you. O son of Adam! If you were to come to Me with enough sins to fill the earth, but you met Me not associating anything with Me I would bring you the like of it of forgiveness.” [Bukhari, 8/319]
