There are some important hadeeths which remind us about this topic. Among them are the following: Narrated 'Aisha: The most beloved action to Allah's Apostle was that whose doer did it continuously and regularly. [Sahih Bukhari] Narrated 'Aisha: Once the Prophet came while a woman was sitting with me. He said, "Who is she?" I replied, "She is so and so," and told him about her (excessive) praying. He said disapprovingly, "Do (good) deeds which is within your capacity (without being overtaxed) as Allah does not get tired (of giving rewards) but (surely) you will get tired and the best deed (act of Worship) in the sight of Allah is that which is done regularly." [Sahih Bukhari] Baring this in mind, it could be a good idea if we set targets for ourselves and make plans for what we can do each day, or each week. Think about realistically what we are able to do, and decide upon it and stick to it, for example reading a portion of quran each day, memorising an amount of ayat per day, or per week rather than just doing things in a haphazard and disorganised way. Rather than trying to overdo it to an extent that we can not keep it, it is better to do a moderate amount often, than one week to do everything and really push ur self but for the next 5 weeks to become lazy and manage only to do ur fardh salah and not to touch the quran or study anything at all. I think Allah SWT's words in the end of Surat al Muzzamil are also relevant for the topic:
73:20 Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint night and day in due measure He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy); read ye, therefore, of the Qur'an as much as may be easy for you. He knoweth that there may be (some) among you in ill-health; others travelling through the land, seeking of Allah's bounty; yet others fighting in Allah's Cause, read ye, therefore, as much of the Qur'an as may be easy (for you); and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah's Presence,- yea, better and greater, in Reward and seek ye the Grace of Allah, for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
